Back at the helm after a long sojourn – it’s been over ten years since I was last Editor of The ANZCP Gazette. It’s worth having a look at the various iterations of the Gazette which entered the ‘modern’ era in May 1998. Previously, the Society operated under the Australasian Society of Cardio- Vascular Perfusionist moniker and communicated by the Australasia Perfusion News. The academic giant Owen Jenkins from St George Hospital in NSW was the Editor of this newsletter. The awesome Tim Wilcox took over in 1998 whereby he endeavoured to bring ‘. . . a mix of discussion and information where we can welcome scientific work with lighter commentary’. He also went on to ‘. . . encourage feedback (letters to the Editor) and also have [the Gazette] perceived as an appropriate . . . publication for scientific work.’ The great Darryl McMillan became the Editor in 2001. He introduced the biannual publication – before and after the AGM – policy. In 2007, during my previous Editorship, after the Society’s name change, a more professional cover appeared displaying our new emblem. The august Brad Schultz became Editor in 2009, continuing on with the same format. A quantum leap in the Gazette design was overseen by the ebullient Martin Gill in 2012. The high water mark in the quality and content of this publication occurred on his watch. Two years later, the tiller was handed over to Molly Oldeen – under whose dedication the Gazette continued to be published despite Molly returning back to her home in the USA in 2014! See Carla Zazulak’s article on Molly in this edition. I wish to thank Molly for her commitment to our profession down-under.
Perfusion News no 13, 1996. Simple Vol 1, No 1: 1998 - An unfortunate format Newsletter. ‘cyanotic’ blue rectangle! New Zealand too close to Australia?
The most salient issue in most of our lives currently – both personally and professionally –is the spectre of the coronavirus pandemic. This is something we all hoped would never occur in our lifetimes; but face it we must. The ramification will be so severe that the world will never be the same again. We must become adaptable and embrace the inevitable changes. But we must also look after ourselves – Jane Otten’s article gives sensible suggestions to do this. Consider the Gazette as one important means to support our colleagues during these trying times – I look forward to contributions for the next edition. Remember that any submission to the Gazette will also be eligible for the ‘Gazette Award’.
The commitment to our profession and local perfusion community is evident in the articles in this edition. With the enthusiasm and passion shown by our newest perfusionists, I feel that the future of our profession is in good hands. Also the embracement of our standards and values by twelve overseas trained perfusionist must be whole-heartedly congratulated. I hope that it will inspire other overseas trained perfusionist working amongst our midst to be welcomed into the fold.
Finally, I wish to thank my Co-Editors Carla Zazulak and Jane Ottens, and Andrea Hunt, the Administrative Officer, for their support and help in producing this edition.
