It has been a very busy time for the Board. We were sad to accept the resignation of Adam Roshan early in the year. Increased family and work commitments meant he had little time left for his Board work. We congratulated Jessica Cantrick on the safe arrival of her second daughter. Jess is cutting back on her Board role while on maternity leave. Alex Peterson from Auckland has accepted our invitation to join the Board filling the position left vacant by Adam. We wish Alex success with his appointment.
The Overseas Trained Perfusionist (OTP) program has kicked off and we now have a CCP Equivalency register for perfusionists who have passed through the program. This has also led to an increase in College membership at Fellow level. Alex Peterson is a product of the OTP program demonstrating that OTPs are keen to be involved in the College and Board. Thanks to OTP Amber Blakey from Wellington for organizing the ASM last year. There are some applications for the second round and these will be completed in October. The feedback from the participants so far has been good.
The Autotransfusion Course is still being well supported with large enrolments for every course. The course is being transitioned to a new format that will make it easier to manage. This comes at a cost so the course fee will be increasing once the new format is in place. The course will still be at no cost to College members.
The MUSC course update has been provided in a letter sent to all members by Rob Baker.
The Structured Course in Clinical Perfusion has been carrying on pretty much as normal except that in the clinical slowdown period in March/April we gave trainees the option of taking on an extra module. There are currently 14 trainees enrolled,
with four sitting certification exams in September, and possibly another four in February 2021. Travel restrictions have forced us to hold the September exams in the trainees units with the Viva component being via Zoom Meetings. If the MUSC course starts in September 2021 the last SCiCP intake will be in February 2021 with a hard cut-off date of February 22nd.
Recertification caused us a few problems this year as everyone transitioned to an annual credentialing cycle. There had been a little uncertainty about some aspects of the requirements and I apologise on behalf of the Board, and in particular myself, for any misinformation, confusion and anxiety that this caused, as well as the issue with certificate expiry dates. It will be much smoother next year. Meeting points will be able to be allocated across two cycles as long as the total number of points is not exceeded. The CPD document will be undergoing updates annually to ensure it keeps up to date with the changing dynamics of our profession, including the impacts that COVID-19 has had on us all. As always, if you are having problems achieving the required number of clinical or non-clinical points, contact the Board as soon as possible.
In order to make the running of the Board and the transition of its members smoother we are embarking on putting together an Operations Manual outlining the individual roles within the Board and how Board operations need to be carried out. The Board, following on from the College example, is transitioning to a more professional dynamic with documented procedures and policies that should be reviewed on a regular basis.
If you have any questions about Board related operations please contact me – the Board is here to serve you in all matters related to education and credentialing.
