C1 Grade
WPHC 115 lost to Berowra 177 @ Storey Park @ 28th & 29th March 2015
Day 1
Berowra won the toss & batted on a bit of a belter of a Storey park track. In previous matches they seemed
content to play for time, but today they played a more positive brand of cricket. Kristoff O’Meara made the early breakthrough, dismissing one of their openers for a duck with the ball of the day that nipped between bat & pad
to hit the top of the off stump. However, Berowra’s top order then dug in, and played very positively, despite the attacking fields we were setting. We had the odd chance, however with both batsmen approaching their 50’s, Kristoff struck again in his second spell to have them 2/103. At 2/140 just before tea, we needed to dig deep to claw our way back into the contest.
Eric Junkkari was the man to step up, taking 2 quick wickets. From this point, the team lifted, with great spells
by Rahul Mucherla (1/37 off 17 overs) and Mitch Blow (2/22). We continued to take wickets and Berowra were getting the wobbles. Kristoff was then introduced for his 3rd spell and proceeded to mop up the tail in style taking 3 wickets in 4 balls – a near-repeat of Rahul’s miracle last week. Kristoff finished with his first 5-for haul in seniors – 5/25, and deservedly led us off the ground.
We had a nervous 8 overs to bat out and unfortunately lost 1 wicket. However with the wicket now very flat, the game is there for the taking by whoever holds their nerve the best. A big last day of the season beckons...
Day 2
Resuming Day 2 at 1/5, we were confident of giving Berowra a good run for their money. Jason Goddard and nightwatchman Rahul Mucherla batted well to see off the new ball, before we lost Jason for 18. Andrew Fiedler joined Rahul and they saw us through to lunch at 2/49. This was a great platform with which to launch an assault at the total, however we lost 2 quick wickets after the break. At 4/49 we were teetering, but when Cooper Goddard (25) joined Rahul, they changed the complexion of the game with their aggression. They added 44 in 10 overs, and turned the match on its head. Unfortunately, with the breaking of the partnership on 93, the end for us came quickly.
A big call out to Rahul who batted with great skill, determination and patience to top score with 42. He was the second last man out after starting his innings in the shadows on day 1, batting for 50 overs in all. He deserved his standing ovation upon his dismissal.
We had a great year, with the old heads joined by a terrific group of young guys who will really have a big future in the game. We had a ball this year, and shouldn’t let this result take away from the enjoyment we each had throughout the season. Well done guys !
