118 A Project of the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF) Step 6: Demographics What does your community look like? Who needs to contribute to the decision and give a perspective to citizens? You need to think about exactly who you involve in whichever engagement you opt for. Surveys and online engagements generally want to hear from as many people as possible. There are some occasions where you might want to hear from a specific part of the community on a topic that impacts them uniquely (think location specific decisions or youth advice on a problem that impacts them more than others). If you’re looking to hear feedback or recommendations on complex trade-offs or even prioritisation, then you might want to hear the judgement of a representative mix of the community rather than gathering everyone’s quick opinion. If you aren’t going to involve as many people as possible, you need to think about what type of people need to be in the discussion so that everyone else can trust the process.
