Four decades ago, Jerry Lohr became one of a handful of early pioneers to explore the potential for premium winegrowing on California’s Central Coast. In the late 1960s, he began searching for the ideal location to plant a vineyard. Raised on a farm, Jerry understood the importance of climate, soil quality and location. His instincts led him to the Central Coast, a unique region with one of California’s longest growing seasons. Selecting Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco appellation for his original vineyard, Jerry planted his rst 280 acres of grapes beginning in 1972. Ideally suited for cool- climate winegrowing, these vineyards have become an acclaimed source for outstanding Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdiguié and Pinot Noir.
Taking a lesson from the winegrowing regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux, Jerry understood that great Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon could not be grown side-by-side. With this in mind, he began planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red varietals in the Paso Robles region in 1987. Today J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines includes more than 1,300 acres of vineyards in Monterey County, approximately 2,300 acres in Paso Robles, and 35 acres in Napa Valley.
From this world-class palette of fruit, J. Lohr crafts wines highlighting bold, concentrated avors and a vibrant sense of place. The winery offers four tiers of award-winning wines focusing on estate grapes – J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series, J. Lohr Cuvée Series and J. Lohr Gesture. In addition, J. Lohr offers a delicious array of avorful wines under the Cypress Vineyards and ARIEL (non-alcoholic.)
“With wine there is a sense of something — of place, of people, of Mother Nature, of soul. In its creation comes a winemaker’s collection of life experiences to guide and nurture and interpret each vintage and its opportunities to create something new, something genuine. Just a simple bottle with someone’s heart and soul inside, for all to enjoy.”
