How will Paris and Los Angeles benefit from the New Norm?
Paris
In Paris, the overarching ambition of the Games is based on the belief that ‘sport can change lives’ and a promise to use ‘the energy of the Games for the benefit of all’. The Olympic Games aim to be both ‘spectacular and sustainable’. Alongside the Olympic Village and the media centre, the only sports infrastructure that has to be built for the Games is the Aquatics Centre. They also plan to utilise Paris’ renowned public transport system for the Olympic Games, drastically reducing costs.
Los Angeles
In LA, no new construction will be needed, significantly reducing the budget. This creates an opportunity for LA 2028 and the IOC to invest up to USD 160 million in local youth sports in the decade leading up to the Games.
Impact on Investment
The plan to utilise existing venues has resulted in lower capital investment budgets for both LA and Paris than budgets put forward by previous candidate cities.
