YOG Lausanne 2020 New sports and events
For Lausanne 2020, we are delighted to have the new exhilarating sport of ski mountaineering. In collaboration with the IFs, YOCOG and IOC, new events formats are tested during the Youth Olympic Games. For the first time, a Winter YOG will include mixed-nationality 3x3 ice hockey (with each team made up of three boys and three girls), a women’s doubles competition in luge, and a women’s Nordic combined event.
Two waves of athletes at Lausanne 2020
To accommodate the increased number of athletes, a two-wave stay system will be pioneered in Lausanne. Each wave of athletes will have a shorter stay than usual on site, allowing the YOG to welcome significantly more participants while extending the competition’s duration by just three days, and without the need for any additional beds.
The two waves of stay will incur no costs on the organising committee, but it means that more athletes will have the chance to compete and experience the YOG.
Key Information Dates: 9 to 22 January 2020
Nearly 1,880 athletes with absolute gender equality
Since the Youth Olympic Games will be held ‘at home’, the IOC will investigate on ways to involve all staff members in Lausanne 2020.
