Example of PyeongChang
The Organising Committee of PyeongChang 2018 (POCOG) announced in its final report to the IOC Session in Buenos Aires a surplus of at least USD 55 million. POCOG is yet another example of Organising Committees breaking even or creating a surplus that can be used for the development of sport in the host nation. In addition to the surplus, PyeongChang 2018 has also set records in many different areas. For example, 6 NOCs competed for the first time; there was a record number of female athletes, and the first ever unified Korean woman’s ice hockey team was formed and competed in the Games.
Any surplus from the organisation of the Games is normally divided between the IOC, the Organising Committee and the host National Olympic Committee for the benefit of sport and the Olympic Movement.
“In recognition of these great achievements, the IOC will contribute its share of the surplus for the benefit of sport in Korea,” IOC President Thomas Bach said.
