Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Report
We started the year with a parent and teacher social on 27 August 2019 at THE SPACE. It was an amazing evening where the PTA welcomed new parents and teachers, as well as those who have been in the SIS community for years. The guests had a good time mingling with each other and enjoyed the delicacies prepared by the PTA.
On 16 September, the renowned psychiatrist and public health professional - Dr. Ronnie Pao presented a talk to our parents and teachers aimed to help us to understand depression, the signs and symptoms as well as the treatment options for this common problem in the world. The presentation was well attended and the presenter was impressed by the proactive feedback at the Q&A session after his talk.
Although society tension was growing at that time, the PTA was fortunate to hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) of 2018/2019 school year on 22 October, 2019. The election hall swarmed with parents and teachers. I was very pleased to see the increasing interest of SIS parents to participate in the election as a PTA committee member. Nominees had to undergo several processes before being elected. Special thanks to Mr. Tom Vignoles, the Principal and members from the Leadership Team who scrutinised balloting with our CPA Auditor at the AGM.
Due to social disruption and the Covid-19 pandemic, the PTA annual fund raiser, the NIGHTFEST – A Comic Odyssey has been cancelled twice on 22 November, 2019 and 14 February, 2020. The PTA was reluctant to cancel but had to follow the instruction from the school management to call off this extremely popular school fair 3 days before the event. Despite our NIGHTFEST Parent and Student Head Team striving for making NIGHTFEST another success on the Valentine’s Day, our boat was hit by the rock again...... and of course the PTA had to cancel all the face to face parent events in this unusual time.
The PTA continues to run the regular services of the student school bus, uniform and stationery shop throughout the year. We are responsible for the preordering service for Year 11, New Year 7 and SCMP student subscription. Nevertheless, the shopping service heavily relies on the group of parent volunteers, who unconditionally devote their time and efforts to support the PTA Shop Administrator. The PTA would not have been able to accomplish this without the help of numerous individuals, including the Prefect Team who sustainably support the carpark duty and reception at PTA events. On behalf of the PTA, we say farewell to our Graduating Class 2020. I hope you can use the experience in SIS to continue to strive to make a positive difference in your lives and to the world, appreciate your family and friends and what you have.
We provided funding to a total value of HK$2.45 million from over 15 proposals from 2015 to 2020. Thank you to Mr. Darin Slethaug, School Vice-Principal who coordinate the teachers on behalf of the PTA to collect and review the wish lists and then present to the PTA committee for our deliberation. The PTA has sponsored projects from HK$1.2 million to a few thousands, and it is our pleasure to continue to support our school.
I have been associated with South Island School from 2014, as a Year 7 parent, the Chair of NIGHTFEST and a PTA committee member from that year. I was elected to be the PTA Chair in 2016. I am proud and honoured to be one of the volunteers of SIS. This is a vibrant and inspiring place. Friendship is at the very heart of our students. Teachers, staff and parents equipped with a range of skills are supportive to deal with almost every challenge. I have thoroughly enjoyed my six years in the PTA Committee. I hope we can maintain an organic connection and relationship between the School, Parents and the PTA.
