The Milky Way’s Heaven had little to do with judgment. Mostly your soul just hung out there being conscious if it wished, or not if not, and played in one of the many Heavenly playgrounds, or not. Except for two days a week at what would be 10 a.m. on Earth, Eastern Standard Time. At that time almost all the dead souls of the Milky Way convened in millions of Recapitulation Chambers for two hours and watched and discussed the ramifications of their past actions on their home planets.
Though there was no judgment, there actually was a Hellish part of the meetings. You had to review parts of your life in which you affected others, and sometimes the effects were not that enjoyable to review. Other times they were downright heavenly. But either way, the use of words that implied judgment was forbidden on pain of being stared at by black-hole monitors who attended every Recapitulation session. This was called mirroring.
You got a mirroring pass on the first two Recapitulation encounters because you were new and because the authorities wanted to show how self-righteous the encounters could be. Graham agreed whole-heartedly with this rule because he was still flustered and repentant over his run-ins with Nietzsche and Liberace. Referees were obviously needed if the challengers were going to be such diametrical opposites.
