I thought I might suggest the ‘West Wing’ as I think it is now available on Netflix, just because it is what could be in America. Just the right tonic to counter the horror of Trump.

Robert Harris novels:
The Cicero Trilogy: three books that chart the history of one of the greatest orators in history and his encounters with the good and the great of Rome i.e. Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, Crassus, etc.
An Officer and a Spy: this novel is about the Dreyfus Affair and the anti-Semitism in nineteenth century France. One of my favourite novels.
Munich: A fictional account of the Munich Peace Conference in 1938, it is gripping.
Fatherland: Details a murder mystery in a Europe that has been taken over by a victorious Germany after the Second World War. Utterly brilliant!

The Kingsbridge books

The books are The Evening and the Morning (Anglo-Saxon England and Vikings), Pillars of the Earth (the Anarchy and Henry II), World Without End (the Hundred Years War and the Black Death) and A Column of Fire (Elizabethan and early Stuart England).
The Century Trilogy
https://www.panmacmillan.com/series/the-century- trilogy/S103786111724 – these books focus on the global events in the C20th. It charts the course of families in Britain, Germany, Russia and the United States and how their stories are intertwined. These are outstanding.
The Fall of Giants
What opens like scenes from Downton Abbey evolve into a novel about the horrors of the First World War and the societal changes in these countries (Russian Revolution, the abdication of the Kaiser, the growth of the Labour movement in Britain).
The Winter of the World
This deals with the interwar years and the Second World War. Events include the rise of Hitler, the Blitz, Operation Barbarossa, Pearl Harbour, UK and US politics etc.
