And the incomparable: John Adams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDGVcq2UFNE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khqq1dt3BuM
The rivalry with Thomas Jefferson pervades the series and for all his faults you can’t help but be rooting for Mister Adams.
Film
Night of the Hunter (1955)
Robert Mitchum is “the preacher”.
“Lord, you sure knowed what You was doin' when You put me in this very cell at this very time. A man with $10,000 hid somewhere and a widow in the makin'.
The scariest (and the most mystical) bit of the film is below.

And the “story of good and evil”:

And
Cinema Paradiso (1989)
Magical and beautiful. With Ennio Morricone’s irresistible sound-track.
Mrs Morgan
I Claudius
Brian Blessed without a beard, Patrick Stewart with hair, Sian Phillips magnificently poisoning her way to power and, of course Dereck Jacobi as the unlikely emperor.
Just the right amount of liberties taken with the truth. Get your bowl of olives and settle down for a binge watch.
Mrs Pery
Cry, The Beloved County by Alan Paton.
An absolute must read and on my all-time top 5 list.
It is the most compelling story of the lives of a rich white landowner in South Africa and a poor black village priest, and the desperate way their two lives are brought together.
The description and characters are simply brilliantly written you feel you are in the country with them.
Miss Hill/Mr Sutherland
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.
True crime, brilliantly written: tells the story of a quadruple murder in Kansas, conducted by two unlikely killers.
Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian
For History fans, like Jane Austen but on a Nelsonian battleship: thrilling action and acute human observation combined!
The Night Manager (BBC iPlayer)
Critically acclaimed John le Carré adaption: Pine, an ex- British soldier, is hired by an intelligence officer as a covert operative. He is tasked with infiltrating the inner circle of Roper, a secret arms dealer and also his lover's killer.
The Social Dilemma – Netflix
If you haven’t seen it, you must: Tech experts sound the alarm on the dangerous human impact of social networking.
Her – directed by Spike Jonze
Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Theodore Twombly, an introverted writer, buys an Artificial Intelligence system to help him write. However, when he finds out about the AI's ability to learn and adapt, he falls in love with it.
Mr Turner – directed by Mike Leigh
Art fans! Eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (Timothy Spall) lives his last 25 years with gusto and secretly becomes involved with a seaside landlady, while his faithful housekeeper (Dorothy Atkinson) bears an unrequited love for him.
Mrs Quinn
Books
John Irving A Prayer for Owen Meany and The World According to Garp – Irving’s writing is utterly compelling as well as brilliantly funny.
Edward St Aubyn’s Patrick Melrose novels are as brutal as they are precise. I recommend reading them in order and then watching the TV series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
TV
The Thick of It is hilarious political satire of the modern British government.
The first couple of seasons of The West Wing, following a fictional American president, make for some of the best script writing ever – fast-paced wit.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 was released straight to Netflix in October and it’s well worth a watch. Great legal drama.
I loved the film Jojo Rabbit – a comedy about a boy growing up in Nazi Germany – you have to watch it to get it!
