THE CURRENCY OF LOVE | Chapter 10
Whenever we give our money, time or attention to someone else, it draws us closer to that person. It might be a note of encouragement, the provision of refreshments, helping someone who is discouraged or some other kind of practical help. Whatever it may be, these actions are showing love and compassion by investing in someone’s life. It demonstrates that people matter to us, that they are important, and this elevates them above material riches that seek to captivate our hearts. Therefore, making a deliberate decision to be loving and compassionate will help us to override every other thing that seeks to find its home in our hearts, including money and possessions.
Equally, when we allow possessions to dominate the use of our money, time and attention, our hearts become jealous, resentful, and we focus on ourselves, ignoring the very people who more precious than gold and silver. We would probably be much more successful at accumulating money if we were to sacrifice our relationships with family and friends, but the end would never justify the means, and we would never feel happy or fulfilled. Finding a balance between these aspects of life will take us to a higher level of personal satisfaction.
Meditate on this truth: We can give without having any love, but the opposite is not true – if we love, we will always give.
