Informal Checklists
Writing Process Checklist (Informal Assessment)
This checklist is for informal use during the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, and editing), for any type of writing. Although all writing standards are formally assessed within the curriculum, observing students as they engage in the writing process throughout the school year can provide you with additional information and build student capacity in recognizing what is required in each phase of the writing process. Teaching notes in module lessons suggest when this checklist might be used.
For ease of use, limit the rows selected for each observation, focusing on only one or two criteria during each phase of the writing process. Plan to complete the full checklist across multiple writing pieces.
Have students store their informal checklists in their Track Progress folders, keeping them organized and giving them easy access to information on how they are progressing across the year.
To assess student progress, prepare one checklist for each student. For each criterion, circle the appropriate number using the following key:
4 = Advanced
3 = Proficient
2 = Developing
1 = Beginning
