• Call on udent volunteers to share. Ask udents to choose one translation to silently repeat. Invite them to say their chosen translation aloud when you give the signal. Chorally repeat the translations and the word in English and invite self- and peer correction of the pronunciation of the translations and the English.
• Ask:
“Who can use use entitled to rephrase the sentence from Article 17 we discussed in Lesson 7: Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others?” (Everyone is entitled to own property alone as well as in association with others.)
• Say: “Next, we take the sentence apart, chunk by chunk. We gure out what each chunk means, and why it’s important. Let’s talk about the r chunk of this sentence.”
• Display and read aloud the following sentence rip chunk: Everyone
• Remind udents that highlighting language can help them notice important
ructures and patterns.
• Underline Everyone in blue and invite udents to do the same on their note- catcher.
• Ask:
“Who is this sentence about?” (all people in the world)
“What do you recall about the ructure of this same chunk from Article 17?” (This chunk tells us who the sentence is about. Everyone is the subject of the sentence, a noun.)
• Remind udents that highlighting language can help them notice important ructures and patterns.
• After inviting responses, write and display udent ideas.
• Say: “You did well guring out what the r chunk means, and why it’s important. Let’s talk about the second chunk.”
• Display and read aloud the following chunk: is entitled
• Underline is entitled in red and invite udents to do the same on their note-
catcher.
• Ask:
“What does this chunk tell us?” (This chunk tells us more about everyone: the ate of everyone being entitled; the ate of everyone having the right.)
• Remind udents that movement and acting out can help them gure out the meaning of sentences and chunks. Ask:
“Can you show me with your face and body how it looks to be entitled?” (Responses will vary, but look for udents to have an empowered look, smiles, arms crossed.)
• After inviting responses, write and display udent ideas.
