Stories of Human Rights
“What if we remove this long predicate?” Experiment with removing the red chunks and rereading the sentence aloud: “Everyone.”(It doesn’t make sense. The subject, everyone, isn’t doing anything. It needs the predicate.)
“Can you gure out why we need to know about subjects and predicates in English?” (Mo English sentences have a subject with a predicate. We almo always need to write a subject with a predicate in our sentences.)
• If productive, cue udents to expand the conversation by giving an example:
“Can you give an example?” (Responses will vary.)
• After inviting responses, write and display udent ideas.
• Ask:
“What other que ions can we ask that will help us under and this sentence?” (Responses will vary.)
“Now what do you think is the meaning of this sentence?” (Responses will vary, but may include: All people are born with the rights in the UDHR, regardless of their background or ideas.)
“How does the Language Dive add to your under anding of the guiding que ion?” (Responses will vary.)
• After inviting responses, write and display udent ideas.
Practice
• Say: “You did well putting the chunks back together again and talking about how this Language Dive has added your under anding of the meaning of the sentence and the guiding que ion.”
• Remind udents they will now go from the Recon ruct to the Practice age: “You’ve played with the sentence and gured out the meaning, and why it’s important to the guiding que ion. Now let’s art to use the language in the sentence for our own speaking and writing.”
• Display the sentence frame:
“_____ is entitled to _____.”(subject + predicate ‘is entitled to’) Tell udents you will give them time to think and discuss with their partners. Say:
“Use this frame to talk about human rights in your own words with your triad.”
• If productive, cue udents to clarify their sentences by con rming what they mean:
“So, do you mean _____?” (Responses will vary. Ensure that udents are using the ructure meaningfully.)
• After inviting responses, write and display udent ideas.
• Congratulate udents on completing the Language Dive to better under and the meaning of this sentence, how it connects to the guiding que ion, and how to use it in their own speaking and writing.
