   Hello from your Legislative Committee!
GLAA Family,
The New Normal is here. Well, sort of. Certain parts of our community and economy are opening up and that comes as relief to our industry. Continue to reach out to the GLAA office or Stephen Marshall, the GLAA Attorney for any questions you might have regarding COVID-19.
As of June 1, courts are open for eviction cases that do not involve failure to pay rent. Once the State of Emergency is lifted, all evictions can be filed and will be scheduled for hearing.
Pools potentially could open on June 29. Potentially because Mayor Gorton has announced that pools in Lexington will remain closed indefinitely. It remains to be seen what that means for pools within apartment complexes. Stay tuned to Stephen Marshall for more info on pools in Fayette Co.
Gyms are open as of June 1. CDC and Governor Beshear’s guidelines for Fitness Centers should be followed to avoid any regulatory issues that could come up. Again, see Stephen Marshall’s social media and email newsletters for more information.
In addition to these re-opening timelines, there are other topics that continue to come up for the Legislative Committee. Rent Strike 2020 is still trying to gain momentum based on misinformation that our committee has already brought up to the GLAA membership throughout the COVID-19 quarantine and economic hardship that it caused. To our benefit, Governor Beshear’s office continues to remind our Commonwealth that rent must be paid and recommends to laid-off residents to make arrangements with their landlords.
I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize JD Carey, the Louisville Apartment Association Executive Director. JD has worked tirelessly, along with our Legislative Advisor John McCarthy, to keep an open dialogue with the Governor’s office. This has proved invaluable to our industry and has allowed for timelines to be moved up where needed for our industry.
As always, feel free to reach out to the GLAA office for more information and where ever you are, please Stay Safe!
