Fortier Relatives - Headstones In Quebec Achille Fortier (Ed's father), La Guadeloupe Cemetery, Quebec (wrong dates) Achille is a real mystery. His birth year ranges from 1864 to 1872. His name is spelled several ways: Archille, Archile, Arcilles, Achille, Achile and Achilles. Grandpa Ed told me he was called “Archie”.This headstone has him born in 1864. The photo was confirmed by Ghislaine Dostie Savoie, his granddaughter (d/o Emilien Dostie & Lucienne Fortier), who claims to remember seeing it in the same cemetery about an hour north of Lac Mégantic, where some of Achille’s family members also are buried. Achille’s parents, George(s) & Virginie did not marry until 1866, so it is highly unlikely that the 1864 date is correct. Achille had two older brothers. Emide was born in 1867 (he disappears from the records after his birth), followed by Edmond (Edmund) in 1868. I believe Achille was born between 1969-1971. A younger brother, Clovis, was born in the 1870s followed by the sisters in the 1880s. The 1901 Canadian Census indicates that Achille and Clovis were both still living at home with their parents even though they were adults (bachelors). This is the only census I found that lists their actual birthdates. It is hard to read, but it looks like Achille was born Feb. 14, 1869 and Clovis was born March 29, 1874. A previous record had Clovis born Aug. 15, 1875. Their father George(s) was born June 19, 1840 and his wife Virginie Audet dit LaPoint was born Jan. 21, 1840. Dennis and I heard from the Quebec Fortier relatives that when Achille died his widow, Marie Boulet, married Achille’s brother Edmond. I have not discovered any marriage record so I suspect they may have just “moved in together”. Dennis couldn’t find Marie’s grave.
