 DANIELLE TAY
Traversing the boundaries of painting and craft, Singaporean artist Danielle Tay makes paintings using paper and wood, a method developed during her studies at the London’s Slade School of Fine Art. She has exhibited around the world in London, Korea, Moscow and Hong Kong, and most recently earned a Highly Commended Award in the reputable Rise Art Prize 2018.
Ihave always been artistically inclined, ever since I was a child. At that time, I didn’t know what my path would be in life, but I knew that I loved making things and creating. I found that I expressed myself best when I worked with my hands, and was drawn to exploring the colours and textures of the world
around me through that process.
When I was invited to translate a lasting legacy of Singapore into a full scale artwork I was compelled to explore how the natural world co-exists with the man-made, and has adapted alongside the rapid shift of our island nation from a laid-back Kampung (village) into a fast-paced sky-scraper filled city. On the surface, biodiversity might not be something people associate with Singapore, but the natural habitats we do have are incredibly important to maintaining a balanced lifestyle. They are where we can escape to for reprieve from the buzz of urban life and make for exciting discoveries in our small city state.
