opportunities to demonstrate they have learned a specific skill. Recognizing that students have different learning styles, teachers use a variety of assessments, including written, oral, interviews, teacher observations of group or individual tasks, journals, and learning logs. Research has shown that when students understand specifically what they need to learn, educators say that it’s easier for them to be successful in school and in life.
On the report card, parents will see the standards their child is working on during each grading period and see their progression toward mastering those standards.

PARENT - TEACHER CONFERENCES
The school system provides two conference times per year. This is the best method developed thus far in reporting student progress to the parents, as well as giving the school a better understanding of your child. A notice will be sent home prior to the conference day, which will note suggested time periods. The school would like to emphasize that a conference may be held with a teacher or principal at any time. Please call the school office for an appointment.
Midway through each grading period, teachers will be informing parents of those students in danger of failing or achieving below expectation. The reports should be returned promptly to the teacher with the parent’s signature included indicating that the parent did see the report. Parents are encouraged to contact individual teachers throughout the year to discuss their child’s progress. Every teacher is available for parent conferences. Please call the school office for an appointment.
PERMANENT RECORDS - RIGHT OF ACCESS
It is the belief of the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School Board of Education that accurate and complete records should be maintained for all students. It is also the intent of the Board of Education to protect the confidentiality rights of all students and their parents as stipulated in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (PL 93-380) and Sections 3317.031, 3319.32, 3319.321 and 3321.12 of the Ohio Revised Code. Federal Statute (Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) as amended provides parents or legal guardians the right to inspect and review the education records of their children. Parents may make a request in writing or call for an appointment with a school administrator for a review of their child’s records.
