ABSENCE (UNEXCUSED)
The following are examples of unexcused absences:
1. Truancy
2. Oversleeping, missing the school bus or other transportation
3. Concerts
4. Trips not approved in advance.
5. Shopping
6. Hunting, fishing, attendance at games
7. Birthday or other celebrations
8. Gainful employment
9. Driver’s training during the school day
The following applies to an unexcused absence:
1. The student shall not receive credit for class work missed.
2. A grade of "F" shall be entered for graded class work missed in
each subject for each day of unexcused absence.
3. F's or 0's (zeroes) received for unexcused absences shall be
averaged and, therefore, shall affect the final grade during any
particular grading period.
4. Each hour of absence in excess of 65 hours of excused absence all
year allowed by a parent’s note or telephone call to the Attendance Office will be unexcused unless the requested documentation is provided to the Attendance Office within 24 hours upon the student’s return to school. The student may be subject to discipline for truancy as well.
HOUSE BILL 410 (TRUANCY)
While some absences are legal and/or excused, truancy is not. Truancy is defined as absence from school or class for reasons not qualifying as legal in the Ohio Administrative Code. Truancy shall be considered any unauthorized absence from school or class.
Chronic absenteeism and truancy pose problems for the student. They interfere with learning and can result in his/her failure to acquire the skills and credentials needed for employment, post-secondary education, and success in life. Truancy is considered a serious breach of school rules.
House Bill 410 was passed by the Ohio General Assembly to encourage and support a preventive approach to excessive absences and truancy. An
