were no programs to help her and other children like her.
Over the next 13 years the Burton’s worked with parents, legislators and professionals to begin developing services.
In October of 1971, community-based programs began as
the Hope Center was established. This program began with eight clients,
two staff members, and a budget of $22,000. This was the first work activity center in the Southeast.
What began as a dream has grown to serving over 500 people with disabilities and special needs in six counties (Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Lexington, McCormick, and Saluda). Burton Center for Disabilities and Special Needs is a non-profit, multi-county agency. Burton Center’s mission is to Discover and Develop Unlimited Potential.
Services are provided to help each individual reach their full potential. Services include: day services for adults at four centers located in Greenwood, Lexington, Saluda and Ware Shoals, residential services (26 community residences, 3 supervised living programs, 4 community training home I’s) HASCI Case Management and Respite.

The Greenwood County Community Foundation (GCCF) was created in 2009 through the generous gift of an anonymous donor who saw the need for Greenwood to have a vehicle through which individual charitable giving could be streamlined, and at the same time awareness could be raised around needs and community issues in Greenwood County. Since making its first grants in 2011, GCCF has given almost $4.8 million in grant funding to worthy causes in Greenwood and around the world while growing its total assets to almost $11 million. Currently, GCCF holds 49 named funds created by individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations, and oversees two major granting initiatives: Greenwood Women Care,
the Benjamin E. Mays Endowment and the Greenwood Community Response Fund. Those interested in learning more about customized charitable giving plans are encouraged to contact the Foundation at (864) 223-1524 or email staff@greenwoodcf.org.
