Self Regional Healthcare, formerly Self Memorial Hospital, was built in 1951 to be one of the most advanced hospitals in the country. Local business leader and philanthropist James C. Self personally oversaw its construction and recruited top physicians from across the United States. Mr. Self’s commitment to advanced care with leading-edge technology continues today. His original vision has evolved with the times as the hospital has grown into a major referral and medical center providing advanced healthcare services to a population of more than a quarter of a million people throughout the Lakelands of South Carolina.
Hospital renovation is not the only expansion made to
the organization over the years; the network of care has dramatically expanded to include the Cancer Center, Heart and Vascular Center, Neurosurgery and Spine Center, Orthopedics, Urology, Joint Center, Women and Children’s Center, Optimum Life Center, Montgomery Center, Family Medicine Residency Program,Health Express Mobile Services, Mobile Mammography, Occupational Medicine, Sleep Disorders Center, Pain Management Center, Home Health Services, Outpatient Surgery Center, Imaging Center, Wound Healing Institute and Behavioral Health & Counseling. In fact, just in the last few years, Self Regional has significantly increased the network of primary care, specialists and hospital-based physicians working together to provide convenient and comprehensive care to the Lakelands. In 2020 Edgefield Medical Center, a Department of Self Regional Healthcare Partners was added to the growing list of practices in
the Lakelands, serving patients in Edgefield County with primary care services, as well as specialty services like Pediatric care, Cardiovascular care and Orthopedic care. The SRH organization has a total of 23 primary Care practices and 21 Specialty and Hospital-based practices bringing healthcare access for the entire Lakelands community.
2020 and 2021 brought many tough changes for the world, and especially for our community. With the appearance
of COVID-19 came many difficult challenges, and we are proud to say that Self Regional Healthcare rose to the occasion and continued to provide top-tier healthcare for the Lakelands region, including offering free COVID-19 testing and vaccination in their 7-county service area as well as Virtual Care so patients could visit a provider via smart phone or computer.
At one time or another, Self Regional has had an impact on everyone in the Lakelands. From a broken arm, to the birth of a child or chemotherapy, Self Regional is there. Community is highly valued at Self Regional Healthcare, and aptly expressed in the organization’s mission statement: “Our hearts, hands and minds are leading our communities to better health.
