Greenwood County Second Start
Adult Literacy and English Language
Learning Program–Second Start is an adult
literacy and English Language learning program
at the Greenwood County Library. The program provides services to adult learners seeking to improve reading, math and digital literacy skills. The program also offers services to residents who speak a first language other than English. They provide instruction in speaking, reading and writing English.
Small group classes and tutoring sessions with volunteer tutors take place
throughout the week during regular library hours for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. The Second Start program
is open to Greenwood County citizens over the age of 18. Their volunteer tutor program is also open to all Greenwood County residents who are able to read, speak and write
Erskine Towers English.

Erskine College has been preparing students for lives of learning, service, and leadership for more than 180 years. As a Christian liberal arts college, they educate students for careers, but more importantly, Erskine College prepares them for their life’s calling. Erskine College offers 19 majors and 26 minors. Their faculty can help students customize a course of study that suits their personal and career goals. Class sizes are small, so professors know their students and seek to build mentoring relationships with them. Faith and learning are integrated in the classroom
at Erskine, and they make the spiritual growth and development of their students a priority.
Lander University has been providing educational
and cultural opportunities since its founding in 1872 as Williamston Female College, in Williamston, S.C. The college moved to Greenwood, S.C., in 1904 and was renamed Lander in honor of its founder, the Rev. Samuel Lander. It became part of the state system of higher education in 1973. Lander is now a coeducational, state- assisted, comprehensive, regional, four-year university with market-driven signature academic programs, including professional programs in business, education and nursing. Lander has a rich history of serving the educational needs of a diverse student population, and with more than 60 areas of study, the university is a community where learning, energy and creativity flourish. In addition to a robust undergraduate curriculum, Lander offers a selection of unique master’s programs, as well as online and distance learning options.
