Uptown Greenwood’s Emerald Triangle cultural district is an area of charming historic architecture and character, with restored buildings from the turn of the 20th century. The Greenwood Museum is one of the show pieces of the district. The Museum is one of three key Uptown cultural sites, along with The Arts Center and the Greenwood Community Theatre, just steps from the unique shops and restaurants of Uptown.
The Greenwood Museum’s mission is to save, share and celebrate Greenwood’s history. Stories of the history are told through award winning exhibits and displays. You will find replicas of stores that lined Greenwood’s Main Street (circa 1910) located on the main floor. The second-floor houses natural history, an exhibit of wild animals and a display of rocks and minerals from the area. Did you know that gold and amethysts, garnets and sapphires have been found in South Carolina?
The lower level houses a brand-new exhibit that showcases institutions and interpretations that depict daily that reflect Greenwood in the early 1900s. Included are a Carolina Kitchen from the 30s and a 1920s bathroom, plus sections on the Index-Journal, Greenwood Mills, Hodges Drug Store, an 1885 hearse from Blyth Funeral Home, plus one of the first robotic arms from the 1970s, which was created right here in Greenwood at the former Cincinnati Milacron plant.
