the outdoorsman many avenues for recreation. Lake Greenwood, which features over 11,000 acres of
water along the borders of Greenwood, Laurens, and Newberry counties, offers largemouth bass and crappie fishing and has become a popular destination for anglers. Located within a 30–45-minute drive of five different lakes, the area known as the “Lakelands” region has gained popularity with competitive and recreational fishing. The Lakelands region also offers a large number of campgrounds and parks. Many sites are located alongside one of the lakes in the area and feature lake swimming, hiking trails, and picnic areas for reunions and special events.
Connect Lake Greenwood (CLG) is a citizen led initiative that works to improve the quality of life in and around Lake Greenwood. Adopted by the Greenwood County Council in 2015, a 20-year lake master plan was developed with citizen input. CLG is responsible for driving the Lake Master Plan and convenes quarterly with representatives from Laurens and Newberry counties.
Key accomplishments have included:
• Recruitment of a signature restaurant, Break on the Lake, to the shores of Lake Greenwood, (opened 2018)
• Developed new lake gateway and directional signage, plus provided safety lights on key bridges and train trusses.
• Development and implementation of the Interpretive Lake Signage project, featuring over 25 signs and maps across the lake documenting key historical events and stories of the lake’s heritage.
• Creation of an annual lake summit, Life on the Lake, held each spring to communicate key initiatives, projects, events, and future goals to interested stakeholders.
• Hosts an annual Lights on the Lake Fireworks Display, featuring live music and food celebrating Independence Day.
• Hosts a variety of lake events, including the “Music on the Lake” concert series and kayak/canoe paddles
• Promotes Lake Greenwood and maintains the ConnectLakeGreenwood.org website.
CLG is an initiative of the Greenwood Community Improvement Foundation of the Greenwood SC Chamber of Commerce. Other Lakelands chambers, including the Laurens County Chamber, are active partners of CLG.
