Message from the Medical Officer
Our friend and colleague, Dr. Hiroji
Noguchi passed away on October
4, 2019 at home in Mississippi
after a lengthy illness with cancer
at the age of 61. He was a former Chief of Surgery at Adventist Health Castle and the Medical Director of the Windward Surgery Center. On January 22, 2020, we dedicated the new Dr. Hiroji Noguchi Pavilion in his honor. Below is an excerpt from a speech I gave for that occasion.
Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Hiroji Noguchi
by dedicating this pavilion in his honor. For 18 years, Dr. Noguchi devoted his life to caring for the surgical needs of this community. I have had the privilege of working closely with him; we spent many days, nights, weekends and holidays together, operating on gravely ill patients, sharing in the triumphs and occasional failures.
We all know that Dr. Noguchi had a wonderful sense of humor – he was often described as funny, hilarious and a rascal. If he was here with us today, I think he would approve of this pavilion. He would think the location is nice: close to the physician parking so he wouldn’t have to walk so far; close to the ER so he could take calls easily; and, most importantly, close to his family’s first home in Hawaii, three houses away from that corner there, so he could watch over his beloved wife and three children.
But he would also appreciate the irony of the “No Smoking”
sign next to his name here. As a former smoker, he would
often ask to take a “short respiratory therapy”, his code words for a cigarette break. And as a humble person, he would get embarrassed about all this fuss we’re making over him today.
To deflect attention away from himself, he would jokingly ask whether we’re serving sushi and sake for refreshments later, as one should in honoring a Japanese individual. And he would feign astonishment that if he can’t smoke, drink and eat fish here, what kind of a gift was this? All said, of course, with a gleam in his eyes and a mischievous smile on his face.
And speaking of gifts, I would remind him of the time when he gave a gift to his wife, Vickie, for Mother’s Day. He was so proud that he picked the gift out himself; it was a beautiful orange dress. But when Vickie saw it, she said, “Honey, this
is a wonderful dress. But it’s a maternity dress. And I’m not pregnant!” Well, Hiroji, in giving, it’s the thought that counts.
We are here today, filled with thoughts and memories of Dr. Hiroji Noguchi – a hard-working, dedicated, conscientious and excellent surgeon and doctor. As a testimony of how skillful a surgeon he was, when my son developed appendicitis at age 17, Dr. Noguchi was his surgeon. My wife and I had complete faith in his abilities as a surgeon. He was often a “doctor’s doctor” or a
