Perioperative
Services stays
motivated by learning
and development
By Todd Reese, Director of Human Performance
“If you are not learning, you are not motivated. We want to keep our team excited and happy to come to work,”
said Patti Aylward, RN BSN Manager of PACU, ASF and Preoperative Services at Adventist Health Castle. “Learning increases engagement and, ultimately, longevity.”
The department is a team comprised of 25 individuals who definitely “walk the talk” when it comes to learning and development. Their Gallup Scores, specifically Question 12 regarding Learning and Development, reflect that the department has made education
a priority. They scored 4.87, an increase of .19 points from the past year.
Learning and development is integrated into their workflow on a daily basis, starting with Monday morning huddles.
“Each morning, we will share what we are learning, whether it is from the events and seminars we attend during our education time, or what we are learning from the classes and programs Castle offers,” says Aylward.
So far, two from the department graduated from the Nursing Leaders Academy (NLA) and one is currently enrolled in the NLA. They also have an associate who is enrolled in the MBA Program Castle offers through Argosy University.
“In addition to working full time she attends school full time, and has a family at home,” explained Aylward about the associate pursuing her master’s degree. “It is a tough schedule but her team is supporting he, and she is just a couple months from graduation. We are all so proud.”
Also on Aylward’s team are both the President and Vice President of the Hawai‘i Islands PeriAnesthesia Nurses (HIPAN), and a component member of the American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), which seeks to provide the perianesthesia
nursing community with the educational and professional resources necessary to promote the highest standards of care for Hawai‘i.
“We are so blessed to have a team that makes learning a priority. They take ownership of their roles and strive to learn more, whether it’s on policies or new procedures,” said Aylward.
To further foster this spirit of learning and growth, Aylward develops learning resources for her team, organizes in-service trainings taught by physicians or other experts and hosts a department-wide skills fair each spring.
“We learn and grow together,” added Aylward. “A lot of patients see us working together collaboratively and having fun, but also demonstrating the professionalism and skills needed. They can be confident they are in good hands.”
“Learning increases engagement and, ultimately, longevity.”
