INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Oripak Simmentals have been running for about 20 years. We have built the herd with a concentration of genetics from Hampton Downs Simmentals, but have also purchased a few cows from some other studs in Northland.
The farm just of Kaikohe, is 66 hectares, 50% flat and 50% rolling country side.
STUD FOCUS
To produce polled simmental bulls and cows with a good temperament, easy calving and good growth. Bulls and heifers are fat scanned and beef class assessed by Bill Austin, Austins Ultrasound and we are working towards higher EMA and IMF as this is to help with the earlier finishing of animals. Positive fat covers make for easy keeping in harder times.
BEEF-CLASS ASSESSMENT has been done on rising 2 year bulls, autumn born bulls 2019.
FAT SCANNING has been done on rising 2 year bulls, autumn born 2019 bulls and rising 2 year heifers.
With doing the Beef-Class assessment we have been able to identify less structural faults with using correctly constructed animals. Fat scanning we have been able to identify better fat covers coming through from our own bred stock, while keeping the genetic pool wide.
BVD testing and inoculation and booster has been done on 7 rising 2 year old bulls, 7 autumn born 2019 bulls & 6 rising 2 year old heifers. Negative result.
LEPTO, as youngsters all animals have a 7 in 1 (which has a component of Lepto) followed by a booster. When cows go to the bull they have Lepto. All rising 2 year old bulls and autumn 2019 bulls have had inoculation and booster.
B12/SELINIUM has been used on all stock except autumn born 2020 calves.
Copper is given annually.
