Belarus received $1.3bn in foreign direct investments (FDI) in the first quarter of 2018 on a net basis , or 92% of the government's annual target, the nation's First Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Matyushevsky told the country's parliament on 30 May.
"Macroeconomic balance, steps to improve the business and investment climate have resulted in practical support on the part of our foreign partners," BELTA news agency quoted the official as saying. "The figure is larger than investments received in the entire last year."
The Belarusian economy is recovering from two years of recession, supported by better fiscal and monetary policies, stronger domestic demand, and a more favourable external environment, above all, in neighbouring Russia. According to official data, Belarus' GDP grew by 4.8% year-on-year in January-April, following a 5.1% y/y growth in January-March.
In 2017 foreign investors injected $9.7bn into Belarus' economy (except for banks), says the National Statistics Committee of Belarus. The primary investors were from Russia (38% of the total investment), the United Kingdom (26.6%), and Cyprus (7.2%). Foreign direct investment made up $7.6bn, or 78.5% of the total. In 2017 Belarusian economic operators (except for banks) transferred $5.5bn in investments abroad. Considerable sums were channeled into economic operators in Russia (66.9% of the total outgoing investments), Ukraine (17.3%), and the UK (7.6%). Direct investments accounted for 93.8% of the total outgoing investments.
