Ukraine’s energy sector will be reoriented to renewable energy sources.
The post-war recovery and development of the energy sector must first be fast and sustainable, focusing on innovative technologies and green energy, Deputy Minister of Energy Yaroslav Demchenkov said. "We have significant prospects for developing hydropower as maneuvering capacities for balancing the system. Renewable energy development - wind and solar - must be accompanied by installing electricity storage. Bioenergy is also promising, particularly the construction of thermal power plants utilizing biomass in the context of the gradual replacement of coal generation," he said. The deputy minister added that the direction of renewable gases has significant potential, and Ukraine plans to develop cooperation with Europe in this area.
Ukraine has doubled its sales of green electricity. In September, the State Enterprise Guaranteed Buyer sold 356,000 MWh of electricity from renewable sources for UAH 1.1B. This is 2.2 times more than in August, the press service of the state-owned enterprise reported. The weighted average selling price was UAH 3,082.52 per MWh. In August, the Guaranteed Buyer sold 162,000 MWh for UAH 406M. As a result of 12 green auctions held in September, 327 contracts were concluded compared to 147 contracts in August. The Guaranteed Buyer is an intermediary between producers of electricity from renewable sources and buyers of such electricity.
The first two biomethane plants will open in Ukraine by the end of the year. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the first two biomethane plants will be operational in Ukraine by the end of 2022. One is in the Chernihiv region, with a capacity of up to threemn cubic metres of fuel per year, and the second is in the Vinnytsia region, with a total of up to 10mn cubic metres per year. According to calculations from the Bioenergy Association, by 2030 Ukraine will be able to completely replace imported natural gas up to 10bn cubic metres per year. In addition, Ukraine will be able to export biomethane to the EU through existing gas pipelines. The EU has shown interest in buying Ukrainian biomethane at the price of natural gas. A corresponding memorandum on cooperation between Ukrainian and Dutch companies has already been signed.
