2.9 Russian government spends record amounts in 2020, likely to spend more in 2021 too
The pandemic brought Russian government spending to its highest level in the country’s history in 2020, The Bell reported on March 23.
Experts point out that it is possible to spend more, but they wonder if it is necessary. According to Andrei Chernyavsky, a leading researcher at the HSE Development Center, RBC reports, expanded government spending in Russia, including spending from the federal budget, regions with municipalities, as well as three off-budget funds, reached RUB42.15 trillion ($553bn) last year, which is more in real terms than at any time in the last 30 years.
