    Not dying so much anymore: Mortality rates in Russia have fallen below their pre-pandemic levels, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko reported on June 4, noting that COVID-19 cases nevertheless remain high. The minister offered no concrete figures, however. The Federal State Statistics Service said Russia’s natural population decline in 2021 was more than 1 million people — an all-time record in Russia’s post-Soviet history. In early 2022, officials reported that the Russian population shrank by 692,900 people (the biggest annual decline in 19 years).
Pew Research Center: Perception of Putin lowest in 20 years. The Pew Research Center, a U.S. think tank, said in its latest report published on June 22 that only 9% of respondents have confidence in Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin "to do the right thing in world affairs." Across 18 polled nations, a median of 90% say they do not have confidence in Putin. At the same time, median of 85% across 18 countries express an unfavourable opinion of Russia, with majorities in most nations saying they have a very unfavourable opinion of the country.
Ukraine’s population may decrease by third due to war. According to a study by NoBrainerData, Russia’s war against Ukraine may create a demographic catastrophe due to an excess of war-related deaths, extreme internal mobility, an increase in emigration and fewer births.
