Russian Black Sea resort in Sochi. “The Presidents agreed during talks that we will start partial gas deliveries and payment in rubles,” said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. Russia supplies around 26 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Turkey annually.
Turbine delivery “impossible” even after receipt of German documents on August 3. Gazprom posted the following announcement on its Telegram channel Wednesday evening: ‘The sanctions regimes of Canada, the EU, the UK and the inconsistency of the current situation with the current contractual obligations on the part of Siemens make the delivery of the 073 engine to the Portovaya CS impossible.’ Meanwhile, Vedomosti reports that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the plant where the turbine was re-tested, and stated it is fully operational and can be returned to Russia at any time, provided that Moscow provides the necessary customs documents from its side. Meanwhile, Nord Stream-1 continues to work at only 20% of capacity, and European gas prices remain at extremely elevated levels of over $2,150/mcm and German cities and citizens have already begun reducing gas usage ahead of what looks to be a very difficult winter.
Gazprom suspended all gas supplies to Latvia at the start of August, further reducing Europe’s access to gas. The company claimed that they suspended supply due to “violations of the conditions of purchase,” but did not specify which conditions were violated. Latvia is not alone—Gazprom has also halted gas supply to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Netherlands, and Denmark, and has drastically reduced supply to Germany. As a result, most European countries have been trying to reduce their dependence on Russian gas. Latvia already planned to halt all gas imports from Russia by 2023, and the European Union agreed to reduce overall gas use by 15% this winter. Meanwhile, Gazprom has increased its gas deliveries to China by 61% over the past seven months via the Power of Siberia pipeline, according to their Telegram post.
