4.0 Social landscape
Iran is a diverse country with a population of over 85mn people. The majority of the population is Persian, but there are also significant Kurdish, Azeri and Arab minorities. The official religion of Iran is Islam, and the majority of the population is Shia Muslim.
Iranian society is undergoing a number of changes, including urbanisation, increased education levels and a growing middle class. These changes are leading to greater demands for social and political change.
The Iranian government is facing a number of challenges in addressing the needs of its population, including poverty, unemployment and access to healthcare and education. The government is also facing increasing demands for greater social and political freedoms.
The social landscape of Iran is likely to remain complex and challenging in 2024. However, there is also the potential for positive change as the Iranian people continue to demand a better future.
Women’s rights is expected to be the centre stage of Iran’s social landscape. After the death of Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini in police custody for alleged hijab violation in September 2022, the country was socially shaken by women demanding more freedom, challenging the ruling system and its theocratic doctrine.
These challenges are expected to extend into the new year as the ruling system is scrambling to maintain a balancing act between its approach and the public demand.
