Foreign airlines scaled up transit flights over the Russian airspace by 8% from January 2023, the press service of the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency told reporters. The most active in flights are Chinese air carriers - about 60 flights per day, followed by Air India (20 flights per day) and Belavia (16 flights daily), the air regulator said.
During a government meeting on February 16, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that Russia is planning to increase production of national aircraft and reduce its reliance on foreign models.
President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to approve design passports for upgrading the aircraft fleet in January, and Mishustin confirmed during the meeting that this task had been successfully completed. The passports of investment projects have been approved, and contracts have been signed with aviation companies, he said.
The government is now planning to invest more than 237bn rubles in aviation projects in 2022 and more than RUB32bn rubles in the next two years through the acquisition of bonds from Russian leasing companies. The aim of these investments is to allow the national flagship carrier, Aeroflot, to receive more than 60 long-range aircraft, including MC-21s, new Sukhoi Superjets, and Tu- 214 planes, in 2023-2025. Meanwhile, Russian regional airlines are set to receive around 100 Mi-8 helicopters, and united Far Eastern airline Aurora would receive almost 40 aircraft in 2024-2026.
The government plans to buy the bonds of leasing companies using the National Wealth Fund’s money, according to the government’s Telegram channel.
Mishustin emphasised that the government’s goal is to increase the scale of mass production of the new generation of national aircraft, in order to reduce Russia’s dependency on foreign models and strengthen technological sovereignty. This aligns with Putin's previous statements on the importance of technological independence and self-sufficiency.
This investment in national aircraft production is a significant move for Russia, and will likely have a positive impact on the country's economy. By investing in domestic aviation projects, the government is not only reducing reliance on foreign models but also creating job opportunities and supporting the development of the country's aerospace industry.
