Albania launches tender procedure for Arbri motorway
Poland-born reformist head of Ukraine's rail monopoly resigns
The tender process for construction of the Arbri motorway in Albania launched on August 10.
The highway, which will connect Albania and Macedonia, is considered to be of great importance for Albania’s economic development as it will reduce transport times from Tirana to Macedonia, thereby boosting trade between the two countries.
The project is expected to cost ALL33.4bn (€252mn), local media reported.
Wojciech Balczun, a Polish citizen appointed in 2016 to head up the Ukrainian state-owned railway monopoly Ukrzaliznytsia, has submitted his resignation from the post citing a "negative PR- campaign and even sabotage" against him.
Balczun, appointed in April 2016 in a move broadly welcomed by investors to reform the notoriously corrupt and inefficient company, has been in conflict with the infrastructure minister, Volodymyr Omelyan, who criticised his performance. However, analysts also note that for most of his one-year tenure as CEO, Balczun tried to optimise the company’s procurement policy, inevitably earning him a lot of enemies.
Sole Iranian oceanic port Chabahar, which India believes could unlock export markets across Iran, Afghanistan, the South Caucasus and Central Asia, is to finally receive development financing from New Delhi.
Indian Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said on August 8 during a visit to Iran for the inauguration of President Hassan Rouhani's second term of office that India has cleared the way for $150mn of export-import bank financing to develop the port, located on the Gulf of Oman and providing clear access to the Indian Ocean.
