Poland picks route of Baltic Pipe section
Poland’s gas grid operator Gaz-System has decided on a part of the route of Baltic Pipe through the Baltic Sea, Gaz-System said on June 20.
The pipeline is crucial to Poland’s ambitions of reducing depend- ence on Russian gas. The Baltic Pipe will link Norwegian gas fields, operated by state-controlled oil and gas company PGNiG, to Poland via Denmark. The pipeline will have the capacity to pump up to 10bn cubic metres (cm) of gas annually, possibly bringing Poland’s imports from sources other than Russia to 17bn cm a year. Baltic Pipe is on track for completion in 2022.
Poland consumes about 16bn cm of gas annually – with most cur- rently imported from Russia – but plans not to renew its current contract with the gas supplier Gazprom when it expires in 2022, the year Baltic Pipe is set to become operational.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) plans to mobilise over $1.2bn in financing for Georgia in 2019-2021, including for two major infra- structure corridors, ADB president Takehiko Nakao said during a visit to the Caucasian country.
Nakao singled out the development of the East-West and the North-South transport and economic corridors, both of which are highly important for Georgia’s future development as part of new transit routes across Eurasia.
“These projects are critical for Georgia as it pursues a goal of becoming a regional hub through increased connectivity and trade,” said Nakao.
The European Commission has approved financing of more than €246mn for the construction of a motorway stretch in Romania, the Commission announced on June 19.
Better infrastructure and connections with western Europe are likely to attract more investors to the Southeast European country and help it develop economically.
The stretch to be financed with EU funds will connect Targu Mures, Ogra and Campia Turzii in central Romania.
“This project of high importance, located on a strategic European corridor, will contribute to the creation of a faster and safer transport network in Romania,” Regional Development Commissioner Corina Cretu said.
