4.4.1 Unemployment, income dynamics
Georgian unemployment up 2.1% in 2021
Unemployment down 1.4% in Georgia in 4Q21
The unemployment rate in Georgia in 2021 increased by 2.1% compared to 2020 and amounted to 20.6% according to the data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia.
In urban areas, the unemployment rate increased by 1.9% y/y, while in rural areas it went up by 2.4%. The biggest rise in the unemployment rate was observed in the capital Tbilisi, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Imereti regions. Traditionally, the unemployment rate is higher for men than for women. In 2021, compared to 2020 this indicator increased for women by 1.6%, while it increased by 2.5% for men. The highest rate of unemployment was in the age group of 15-19 years (52.2%), while this indicator is traditionally the lowest in the 65+ age group (6.0%) due to the low activity of the population in this age group.
The unemployment rate in Georgia decreased by 1.4% in 4Q21 compared to the same period of last year and amounted to 19%, the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) reported. In urban areas, the unemployment rate was reduced by 2.1%, while in rural areas it decreased by 0.2%.
