Erdogan out at Abu Dhabi for bankrolling Russian mercenaries fighting for warlord Khalifa Haftar in Libya and Russia for violating agreements that are meant to stem the conflict in northern Syria where Turkey has backed rebel militia and has set up 12 observation posts around Idlib . The emirate was covering the wages of thousands of Russian fighters who support Libyan general Haftar. The UAE and Egypt are, meanwhile, thought to be backing Haftar with air power. Turkey has provided military support to the internationally recognised government in Tripoli led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.
Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on January 21 that oil markets had responded to events in Libya in a relatively calm manner because “the world is awash with oil, mainly coming from the United States.”  Jeff Currie, the head of commodities research at Goldman Sachs Group, concurred, saying that oil markets were reacting relatively calmly to events in Libya. “It would have to be a very substantial disruption to push prices above $70 a barrel on a sustainable basis. The US is still sitting on an enormous amount of inventory.”
Ankara’s relations with Cairo have been under serious strain since the Egyptian army ousted Muslim Brotherhood president  Mohammed Mursi, an ally of Erdogan, seven years ago.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended an Athens signing ceremony for an accord to construct the Eastern Mediterranean natural gas pipeline.  US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo made clear American backing for the pipeline when he attended a Cyprus-Greece-Israel trilateral summit in Jerusalem in March.
