Turkey’s 56 airports served a total of 209mn passengers in 2019, down 0.8% y/y, according to data from airports authority DHMI.
The number of domestic passengers plunged 11.3% on an annual basis to 100mn whereas the international traveller tally jumped 11.4% to stand at 209mn.
Istanbul Airport, the mega airport which in April 2019 replaced Istanbul Ataturk Airport as Turkey’s main international flight hub, welcomed 13mn domestic and 40mn international travellers, 52.5mn in total.
Istanbul Airport is likely to miss its target of serving 80mn passengers in 2020, Kadri Samsunlu, CEO of the airport’s operator IGA, said in January 2020. The airport is only expected to host some 75mn travellers in 2020.
Sabiha Gokcen, Istanbul’s second airport, saw a 21% y/y increase in passenger traffic to 35.5mn in 2019. A total of 21.4mn domestic passengers used the airport, marking a 5% y/y decline, while the number of international passengers soared 21% y/y to 14.1mn. Teething problems that have impacted Istanbul Airport, as well as a lack of public transport access to it, have persuaded many Turks to divert to the second airport rather than use the mega airport in its early phase.
9.1.4  Construction & Real estate sector
Home sales are expected to exceed 1.2mn units in 2020 , Nazmi Durbakayim, board chair of the Istanbul Contractors Association (INDER), said in January.
In 2019 as a whole, house sales declined 1.9% to 1.35mn.
Durbakayim, however, warned that the property market would see higher prices because developers would pass higher costs on to potential homebuyers.
