Giant arch installed on Russia’s new Crimea bridge
The giant arch that is the key part of the new road and rail bridge linking Crimea to the Russian mainland has been towed into place.
Russia is building the controversial Kerch bridge as the only land routes into the Crimea — which was annexed by Russia in March 2014 — are via Ukraine. Construction is continuing apace now the 6,000 tonne, 35 metre high arch has been installed, and the bridge is due to open to road traffic next year and rail traffic in 2019.
But while the bridge will help integrate Crimea into the Russian economy, it could damage Ukraine’s according to a recent study by the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies in Kyiv. It points out that the bridge will restrict ship traffic in the Black and Azov seas, which will reduce trade via the major Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdiansk.
The Work Bank will work with the Romanian port city of Constanta, helping to implement international best practices in urban development.
The aim of the development bank’s reimbursable service agreement with Constanta is to support the city’s goal of becoming an important trade and investment pole in Romania.
“Constanta is an important engine of growth in Romania. Its strategic location and relatively good infrastructure have the potential to attract major investments, but capitalising on its advantages will require effective planning, prioritisation, design and execution of capital investments with a focus on improving the quality of life, and boosting economic growth and performance,” the World Bank said in a statement.
