TANZANIA
IRELAND’S Aminex revealed on August 8 that it was one step closer to acquiring extra 3D seismic data on a section of the Killiwani North Development Licence (KNDL), located offshore Tanzania), as a result of the award of a contract for a survey of an adjacent block.
In a statement, Aminex explained that TSX- listed Orca Energy Group had awarded a con- tract to African Geophysical Services (AGS) of Oman for a 3D seismic study of Songo Songo, which lies directly to the west of KNDL. Under this contract, AGS will collect 200 square km of 3D seismic data from an area that consists mostly of Songo Songo but also includes a 12.5-square km incursion into KNDL, it said.
Both Songo Songo and KNDL contain nat- ural gas. They are connected to the Tanzanian mainland via a shared pipeline.
The primary goal of the survey is to help Orca improve imaging of Songo Songo’s struc- tural complexities, the statement stressed. Nev- ertheless, it said, the incursion into KNDL will also result in the acquisition of data that “will be valuable in identifying fault trends, improv- ing reservoir definition and improving our
understanding of the Kiliwani North and South structures,” all at no cost to Aminex and the other shareholders in the project.
The Irish company said earlier this year that the 12.5-square km area covered by the AGS survey represented “more than 40% of the criti- cal area” of KNDL. It also said that the additional data yielded by the new survey would comple- ment the existing set of 2D seismic data, which cover the block in an irregular fashion.
Orca has already secured all necessary envi- ronmental approvals for the 3D seismic cam- paign, Aminex noted. It hopes to wrap up the survey before the end of the year in order to take advantage of the most favourable weather con- ditions and ensure optimum data acquisition, the company said.
Charles Santos, Aminex’s executive chair- man, commented: “We are pleased with Orca’s announcement of their seismic contract award and timeframe for the acquisition of their 3D survey. The incursion into the KNDL should provide valuable data to improve structural mapping and refine the prospectivity of the Kil- iwani North and South structures.”
It reported that the parties had agreed on a 10-year charter for a floating storage unit (FSU) vessel based on a converted LNG tanker, and added that it expected Eni to sign separate contracts for operations and maintenance (O&M) services for the FLNG and FSU and for
engineering services for the LNG project as a whole.
The Italian major will eventually expand LNG production at Marine XII beyond the capacity of the Tango FLNG vessel. In its state- ment, Eni said that the block would turn out
