9.1.1c Gas sector news
While neighbouring Germany and the Czech Republic have both reduced Russian gas imports to zero, Austria, much like Hungary, has made little, if any headway in reducing its reliance on Russian gas.
9.1.2 Automotive sector news
China becomes global top car exporter due to sales surge in Russia. The Q1 2023 (January-March) saw China export 1.07mn vehicles, surpassing Japan, which had been at the top for many years, to become the world's top exporter. A surge in exports to Russia boosted the overall figure, according to consulting firm AlixPartners. Sales to Russia were 112,000 units, a level almost equal to last year's full-year performance. Meanwhile, China's presence in the European and American markets is still weak, with sales of Chinese brands remaining at just 900,000 units last year. But by 2026, AlixPartners predicts that car exports from China to Europe and the US will grow by 67%. AlixPartners expects global car sales to rise 5% this year, driven by growing demand for electric vehicles. EV sales are expected to increase by 10% in the US, 6% in Europe and 3% in China.
