9.1.5 Utilities sector news
Since April 1, there have been two price ceilings, namely TRY1.20 and TRY2.5 per kWh, in the Day Ahead Market at Energy Exchange Istanbul (EPIAS). The government transfers funds to import coal, gas, fuel oil, naphtha, LPG and diesel.
As of May 20, the EPDK hiked the upper ceiling to TRY2.75 kWh from TRY2.5. As of June 1, the EPDK again hiked the ceiling to TRY3.20.
As of July 1, the EPDK again hiked the ceiling to TRY3.75.
As of August 1, the EPDK again hiked the ceiling to TRY4.00.
On August 1, the daily average price broke a new record with TRY 3.32 ($0.18). The US dollar-denominated record was registered on February 13, 2012 at $3.92.
On July 1, electricity and gas tariffs for consumers were left unchanged.
On June 1, the energy watchdog EPDK hiked the electricity price for industry by 27%, for businesses by 28% and for households by 18%.
As a result, the electricity price was up 170% y/y to TRY2.16 for households.
