2.1 Governing party MPs resign in Georgia
The Georgian Dream party MPs who left the party and the parliament have released a statement on the parliament website about their resignation, pointing to a conspiracy to organise a revolution in Georgia. The resignation of Sozar Subari, Mikheil Kavelashvili and Dimitri Khundadze was announced by Mamuka Mdinaradze, chairman of the Georgian Dream faction, at the end of a majority meeting on 28 June.
According to the former MPs, “there are great powers” who want to organise a revolution in Georgia, “change the government elected by the people” and replace it with people who “are directly responsible for the numerous crimes committed in 2004-2012”, hinting at the opposition United National Movement (UNM). The MPs did not specify what kind of "great powers" they are talking about, although, most likely, they are hinting at Western partners.
According to them, that is why, in the form of a kind of "mousetrap", the topic of the EU candidate status was created and "forced the Georgian authorities to put their heads in". “The only thing for which the topic of the candidate was needed was to aggravate the political background for the Georgian authorities and artificially create a revolutionary charge,” the ex-MPs said.
The former deputies criticised President Salome Zurabishvili, saying she was first involved in this case from Brussels, and then “they launched the National Movement and its satellites and launched a campaign at the request.” According to them, after the EU's decision not to grant Georgia the status of a candidate, the events went exactly as the ruling team "predicted" it – the opponents "came out with lightning speed and demanded the resignation of the government".
MPs accused MEP Michael Gahler of trying to incite a rebellion in Georgia. "In other words, they wanted us to release two criminals [former UNM president Mikheil Saakashvili and journalist Nika Gvaramia] from prison and force [Georgian Dream founder] Bidzina Ivanishvili to leave the country. By doing so, they want to disrupt our constitutional order and deprive us of our statehood, which cannot be allowed at any cost. It is not allowed to sit at the negotiating table with people who do not recognise the state, the government, or any state institution," they said. "They want people without a homeland and without God because they will subscribe to any order. Most importantly, they will start a war blindfolded [and] doom the country to destruction without any hesitation," the former MPs concluded.
