The countries of Northern Europe have already provided €17B in support for Ukraine and will continue to help, said the prime ministers of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to President Zelenskyy. The Prime Minister of Sweden recently announced a $1.3B military support package to Ukraine. Denmark promises to send F-16 aircraft to Ukraine soon; the country has also contributed to the joint procurement of ammunition. For its part, Norway and Britain will provide more naval support to protect Ukraine from the sea.
Ukraine could receive up to €42B from an increase in tariffs on Russian goods in the EU. The EU is considering introducing tariffs on Russian imports worth up to €42B. On the EU’s initiative, trade ministers asked the European Commission to develop a plan to introduce tariffs on goods not subject to sanctions, such as food products, nuclear fuel, and medicines. According to the plan, revenues from these duties should be directed to support Ukraine.
Sweden will provide Ukraine with €6.5B under a security agreement and consider transferring Gripen aircraft. A security agreement signed on May 31 between Ukraine and Sweden will provide Kyiv with SEK 75B (€6.5B) in military aid, and it also stipulates the prospect of transferring JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to Ukraine. Sweden will provide the specified military aid from 2024-2026, amounting to approximately €2.2B per year. The aid amount will increase during the ten-year term of the document. Sweden plans to transfer Archer artillery systems and CV90 combat vehicles to Ukraine and will consider establishing joint production in the future. "A unique part of the agreement is the provision of specialized ASC 890 aircraft, as well as the prospect of transferring JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to Ukraine," the Zelenskyy administration noted. Sweden will also support the development of Ukraine's modern defense and industrial potential and develop bilateral cooperation on the localization, repair, maintenance, and production of Swedish defense systems in Ukraine. Moreover, Sweden has confirmed its support for Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO.
Sweden has provided Ukraine with a record $1.26B military aid package with radar reconnaissance aircraft: What does it change? The Ministry of Defense of Sweden, in addition to supplying the ASC 890 aircraft, has provided its entire stock of Pansarbandvagn PBV 302 armored personnel carriers. The package also includes RB-99-AMRAAM missiles, which can be used both on aircraft and in ground air defense systems, 155 mm artillery ammunition, tanks, and resources for the maintenance of previously transferred equipment. The ASC 890 aircraft is an advanced long-range radar detection aircraft that provides Ukraine with new aerial radar reconnaissance and combat control capabilities for targets in the air and at sea. The radar installed on the ASC-890 can track ships, aircraft, and missiles at ranges of up to 300-400 km at an altitude of 6,100 m. These aircraft will not likely see direct use in Ukraine’s airspace due to the threat of damage but will be utilized from the airspace of border countries. The aircraft’s capabilities will give Ukraine additional opportunities for more effective use of F-16 and other aircraft against Russia.
Portugal will provide Ukraine with €126M in aid under a new security agreement, and the EU will deliver 500,000 artillery shells. On May 28, Ukraine signed a security agreement with Portugal, which includes the provision of €126M in military aid by the end of the year and support in defense sector reforms, demining, and reconstruction.
