War forces grain and oil to travel record distances, the UN says After the conflict and sanctions against Russia disrupted traditional trade routes, buyers are shipping grains and oil from further and further away. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Maritime Transport Review, grain cargoes traveled a greater distance in 2023 than in any other year on record as importers switched to buying from other countries. Oil cargoes also traveled the longest distance since at least 1999 as Russia sought new export markets.

India boosted imports of Russian oil in September, with its total volume reaching 1.57mn barrels per day, up by 9% compared with the previous month, The Economic Times newspaper reported. The share of Russian oil in India’s total crude imports amounted to 38% in September compared to 33% in August when supplies from Russia dropped sharply after reaching peak levels exceeding 40% for several months. State-run refiners demonstrated the highest growth of purchases as their imports were a quarter higher in September compared with the previous month, whereas private refiners’ imports were down by 13%. India boosted imports of Russian oil substantially in 2022-2023. The share of Russian oil in the country’s imports was less than 2% in 2021-2022 financial year (starts on April 1), while by April 2023 it had reached 43%.
Energy Ministers of Russia and Uzbekistan Nikolay Shulginov and Jorabek Mirzamakhmudov signed an intergovernmental agreement to expand cooperation in the sphere of oil supplies on October 6, TASS reports from the signing ceremony. In April 2023, head of the main department of the Uzbekistan’s Energy Ministry Athamjhon Ubaydullaev said Uzbekistan had reached an agreement with Gaszprom Neft on deliveries of 300,000 metric tonnes of oil in 2023.
