9.1.3 Aviation sector news
Belgian Brussels Airlines discontinued the lease of four Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft after technical problems led to delays and cancellations of several flights, Reuters reported on November 2 citing the company representatives. Russian national air carrier Aeroflot recently ordered 100 SSJ-100 jets, with the medium-distance aircraft being the backbone of its ambitious growth strategy based on deeper domestic regional penetration. Reportedly Brussels Airlines leased four SSJ-100 from Irish CityJet, but will now replace them with Canadian Bombardier CRJ-100. In March, Russia's President Vladimir Putin has thrown his weight behind a RUB85bn ($1.5bn) investment into a new version of SSJ-100. In February Russian privately owned airline S7 put in an order for 100 SSJ-100 Russian-made “super jets”. In April, two Iranian airlines signed a memorandum of understanding with Sukhoi for the delivery of an initial 40 SSJ-100.
Russian medium-distance passenger jet Sukhoi Super Jet 100 (SSJ-100) is not performing well due to problems with engines, Vedomosti daily said on November 22 citing unnamed top managers of four airlines and three leasing companies that have operated SSJs. This year Russia's President Vladimir Putin has thrown his weight behind a RUB85bn ($1.5bn) investment into a new version of SSJ-100. Most recently Russian national air carrier Aeroflot announced it will place a new order for 100 SSJ-100s, which is part of the company's ambitious domestic regional expansion plans. However, reportedly the SaM146 engines produced by ODK-Saturn (joint venture of United Engine-building Corporation and French Safran-Powerjet) specifically for Sukhoi have a number of defects that are occurring already after 2,000- 4,000 hours of flight.

Russia's capital ranked sixth in the World Best Cities report published by the Resonance Consultancy, making it into the top 10 along with London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Barcelona, Chicago, Singapore, Dubai and San Francisco, Tass reported on November 12.
