fish products were exported from Russia in 2023, which is 36.1% up y/y, in monetary terms exports totaled $2.89bn. In January-May 2024, 522,640 tonnes of fish products were supplied to China, which is actually the level of last year, the regulator says. The basis of fish exports to China consists of pollock, herring, sardines, fishmeal and crabs. The Russian Federal Fisheries Agency also reports, that in 2023, supplies of Far Eastern crab to China amounted to more than 12,500 tonnes. In 2024, export volume increased by 10%. "Live crabs also have a positive growth trend in value and reached $461.3mn, which is 29% (+ $103.7mn) more than a year earlier," the agency notes. In general, in 2023, the trade turnover of agricultural products between China and Russia increased by 33%, y/y exceeding $11bn, the Federal Fishery Agency adds.
The BRICS countries have endorsed Russia's initiative to establish a grain exchange, Russia’s Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut announced following the fourteenth meeting of the BRICS agriculture ministers on June 28. The meeting also addressed key issues related to BRICS and global food security, she added. "The BRICS countries now make up about 30% of all arable land in the world. We jointly produce about 40% of grain crops, 50% of fish, 50% of dairy products worldwide. Therefore, in fact, the BRICS countries are a key platform for ensuring global food security," Lut noted.
Farmers summarized the trading season's results: $10.76bn worth of grain and oilseeds were exported. As the Ukrainian Grain Association reported, in the 2023-2024 marketing year, which ended on June 30, 2024, Ukraine exported 57.5mn tonnes of grain and oilseeds from the harvest of 82.8mn tonnes, while temporary reserves amount to about 7mn tonnes. In monetary terms, the export of grain and oilseeds amounted to $10.76bn, and the export, including their products, was $17.86bn.
Coal exports from Russia via seaports for the first six months of 2024 amounted to 79.1mn tonnes. This follows from Kpler data, which Vedomosti has reviewed. Compared to the same period last year, shipments fell by almost 17%. At the same time, the negative trend is weakening. As Vedomosti wrote, over four months, the decline in seaborne coal exports was 20% y/y (see the publication of May 31). According to Kpler, 50.5mn tonnes of coal were shipped from Russia via seaports for export in January–April. In June, shipments from Russian ports amounted to 13.9mn tonnes, which is 14% less than the same period last year.
Exports of buckwheat from Russia to China in January - May 2024 increased almost 4 times compared to the same period last year to 93,700 tonnes, Agroexport federal center reported. "China has increased imports of Russian buckwheat 4-fold. According to the General Administration of Customs of China, in the first 5 months of 2024, 93,700 tonnes of Russian buckwheat worth around $34.5mn were imported into the country," the report said. It was noted that for the same period in 2023, the volume of supplies amounted to 24,100 tonnes worth $12.4mn. The report also said that Russia is the only supplier of buckwheat to China.
